November 2023 Mix

Okay, okay, there’s one current trend in music that I absolutely love: moody, weird, Ornette-Colemanish (?) saxophone. In this mix it’s courtesy of Credit Electric, but I hear it in Cassandra Jenkins and some others every once in a while. Very cool. And you know what? I like this mix! The Husbands album is great, I love the weird Windham Hill-esque guitar of ML Buch’s “Flames shards goo.” There’s rock, twang, crunch, beats, men, women and in between on it. It’s a good mix!

But being the bland middle-aged man I am, I had to fulfill last month’s promise to include an Eagles song: “I Wish You Peace.” C’mon, it’s sweet. Written by Bernie Leadon with help from his girlfriend Patti Davis, youngest daughter of Ronald Reagan… Okay, okay, I know I’m losing you. But if like Phoebe Bridgers wrote everyone would love it. Anyway, the mix ends with a palate cleanser: Peter, Paul & Mary’s “Puff the Magic Dragon.” Boy we sang it a lot at Greensview Elementary. Boy it made me sad. It’s amazing Mrs. Wirth subjected us to it.

Without his lifelong friend, Puff could not be brave
So Puff, that mighty dragon, sadly slipped into his cave

I know I was supposed to identify with the boy, but I really, really identified with the lonely dragon left to die (?!?) alone and lonely in his cold, dank, lonely cave. Dear lord, Mrs. Wirth, my dear music teacher, how about a trigger warning??
