It’s Good Friday in Mexico City and I want to go to church, not to attend mass but to enter the space in the afternoon when the devout or not are sitting sadly alone and together, humbled by their troubles, and there’s no priest in sight, just a long, dark room frescoed with crazy images that can’t stand up to the sheer brute force of the money changers prodding and poking us through time. It’s not Good Friday for the Orthodox, my people, that won’t be until May this year. So I’ll wait until then, until the chocolate eggs are half off.
This mix is full of oldies. Not just The Byrds and Iggy Pop but 90s bands like Material Issue and Buffalo Tom, aughts bands like Clem Snide and Iron & Wine, and by this point you might as well throw Sharon Van Etten and Waxahatchee in there, too. There are two songs in a row featuring album covers in which the singer is clothed in a bathtub (Cece Coakley and Asap), which must be a comment on something I’m too old to comprehend. Grout? Water scarcity? Anyway, enjoy. Bless you all.
