A Very Fine Writer of Fictions

July 2024 Mix

I’ve been thinking about safety lately, the cowardice that guides me, or guides us as a species if I want to be fair to myself. Or not even cowardice, but the very nature of our species, eyeing the world for trouble, predators, creditors. At least once a week I have horrific dreams in which I’m recognizing some kind of danger that no one else does, and I can’t convince anyone that it’s happening, and when it does they carry on not worrying themselves a lick. Maybe it’s the mediated world we live in, all the propaganda, or maybe it’s a fear of global warming rendering all these placid summer evenings a horror scene about to happen. I don’t know. I’m living here the good life. Today I’m going to clean our windows, maybe trim some branches. Delight as my boy rides his rope swing high over the descending slope of our little Nebraskan front lawn.

The opening track of this mix is a banger in the goofy, weird style of world music, back when they could label music such. I think Mermaid Chunky is a couple of young artist gals from LA or something, just perfect. I’ve barely ordered these songs. But they’re all great tunes to blast in your little car while you’re hurtling from light to light, filling the atmosphere with CO2 and song.
